Life-skills are the abilities we need to become productive, engaged members of our communities. They include building healthy relationships, communicating effectively, and making thoughtful, informed decisions.
Resiliency is our ability to heal and grow from adversity, trauma, or significant stress by developing mental, emotional, and behavioral skills. It is a learned ability that can be strengthened through practice and a growth mindset. Key components of resilience include problem-solving, self-esteem, emotional regulation, and social connectedness—skills that help individuals and communities flourish even during difficult times.
Life-skills and resiliency are important for navigating life challenges, managing stress, and maintaining physical and mental health. It allows people to be prepared to adapt for challenges they may face in life.
Although the juvenile arrest rate in Orange County has decreased over the past decade, there has been a spike in arrests since 2021 in adolescents aged 10-17 years old. This is likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Sentencing Project also conducted a study of adolescents in southern California who had been released from juvenile facilities, where they they found that “77% reported suffering one or more types of physical, sexual, or verbal abuse.” Following the abuse suffered after release, adolescents experienced greater social and emotional problems, such as symptoms of depression and a continuation of criminal behavior. With a lack of life skills and resiliency, the adolescents struggled to handle life challenges. This emphasizes the need to implement a life skills and resiliency program for incarcerated youth to prepare them for life following probation.
Partners4Wellness has developed curricula and support services designed to help not only struggling adolescents, but also schools, families, and individuals build resiliency and strengthen life-skills—creating a foundation for lifelong wellness.
